How to raise a spoiled brat

The Salt Lake Tribune has been running a series of articles that profile all the counties in Utah. Yesterday's article was about Utah County, and centered on the fact that it is the county in the United States with the highest proportion of its residents under the age of 18 (34 percent). In fact, in many newer suburbs like Saratoga Springs or Cedar Hills, over 50 percent of residents are under 18. Scary.

I was most disturbed, however, by a "cute" little vignette that started the article off. It told of a first grader who didn't like what the school cafeteria was offering for lunch, so she called up mommy and daddy to complain. Mommy showed up with a Lunchable, but by that time Daddy had already picked the girl up to take her out to Taco Time. How cute--she's only 7 and already knows how to manipulate her parents. Can't wait to see what she's like as a teenager...

Let me know the name of that school so I can avoid working there and have to teach that child in 4th grade....wow, her parents have some learning to do. If they both jump that high over a lunch, can you imagine what her prom or the first "D" is going to generate???

Oh, and who in the school office let her phone home over not liking lunch??? Too many enablers here.

Yeeeaahhh...pretty sure that child and her cousins and siblings go to my school. That kind of junk happens all the time, even though we as teachers have firm rules about such nonsense, we can't seem to get the secretaries to toe the dang line. They give in constantly.
Last year a 5th grader was calling home in the office, telling her mom that her clothes weren't dress code appropriate. When he mom got there, she made a fuss with the principal and the teacher, since the kid was in capris and a 3/4 sleeve shirt. The teacher was baffled, since she never sent the kid to call. Turned out the girl decided she didn't like her outfit after she got to school, asked to go to the bathroom, went to the office instead and told her mom to bring her new clothes so she could change. Honestly.

Oh, that is totally believable! I sure hope mom gave that kid the dickens. Sadly, too many times, mom or dad just gets mad at the school and backs up the kid. Sigh...I am so often the first person in the fourth grader's life who says "No" and really means it. (apparently...)Don't get me started...too late...
