Tiny Tuesday Thought

Tonight I re-read a cover letter I wrote four years ago when I applied for a different position at the library where I work. At the time, I had only been in my current job for about eighteen months, but had been wanting to work in another department and move up the ladder a bit. I still feel that way, and was re-reading the letter while writing a new one for a different position that has opened up. As I was reading the letter, I realized how much I've changed and how much I have learned since that time. I was upset not to get hired in the different position and thought I was qualified, and I'm not completely convinced I wasn't, but it was amazing to me to see how much more I know now. It was a good reminder to me of why it is important to stay humble and to remember that there are always opportunities to grow and change.

The Truth Comes Out

I have a problem when it comes to buying shoes. Well, it's actually a problem with buying clothing in general. I'm cheap. Very cheap. I tend to have arbitrary price limits in my head and refuse to buy anything that costs more than that. This does come in handy considering our limited funds for things like clothing and shoes, but it also means that I tend to have a wardrobe of odd, non-matching, ill-fitting clothes. While it's true that I have found some great things at thrift stores and on clearance, I definitely have other clothes that are just plain lame. I will often choose to buy things because they are cheap, even sacrificing what I really want because it doesn't fit my predetermined price conventions. Living with ideals

The first thing on my agenda in Davis was a lunch with some of the current graduate students. One of them asked me a question about my last name and my heritage, to which I replied that it was my husband's last name. That got me some fairly strange looks. Then there was the fact that I didn't order coffee after lunch with all of them. And then there was the awkwardness (more than once during the last few days) of trying to explain why I lived in Spain for over a year and didn't see any movies, go to any plays, or study at the university. Oh, and the fact that I don't drink wine and even though I'm not quite thirty I have been married for almost seven years and have two kids. Man, I am such a weirdo. I lived in Utah for so long that I became very comfortable in not having people think some of the things I do are strange.
