The Brown Plate and the Blue Diapers

When I was a kid, we had a set of Tupperware dishes that came in groovy colors like yellow, orange, avocado green and brown. For some reason, if you were lucky enough to get the brown plate, you were very special. And if Mom happened to give you the brown plate with the matching brown cup, you were definitely better than anyone else in the family. I've often wondered about how the brown plate acquired it's mystique, especially since that coveted status was later transferred to the blue spoon (the one spoon with a blue plastic handle that came in our flea market assortment of silverware).

S-Boogie has already assigned special status to the blue diapers, for some inexplicable reason. Luvs come with a little design printed on them, either red, yellow, orange, green or blue. So only 1 in 5 diapers is blue. I've tried explaining that eventually the blue diapers will be gone and we'll be left with only the other, lesser colors. But, logic has no place in the toddler world. Luckily sometimes she's wearing an orange or a yellow shirt, and then the diaper can be one of those colors to match her outfit. The matching thing is a new obsession too--she needs the purple bowl with the purple spoon and the purple cup. At least I can sometimes still give her what she wants and she hasn't moved on yet to wanting to do things like marry Shamu.

In our family it was the "pretty spoon." And we'd fight so much about who got the pretty spoon that my mom eventually threw it away. Really, the only thing special about it was that it was different from the rest of the spoons.

We had the brown plate at our house. It spent a lot of time on top of the fridge in time-out with the blue cup. We are having color related issues with our dishes as well, especially since our toddler has to share the cups and the bowls with her brother.
My mom's stoneware had little blue flowers. She got a newer set, and we, me and my three brothers, argued over who got the plates with the not-faded flowers at dinner.

We had that tupperware, too! The same colors, I mean. For some reason we only had these tiny square plates and little bowls and cups which were about the size of shot glasses. with lids. I don't really know what the point of the doll-size set, or of my recounting of it, was.

At least Sophie has a sense of color-coordinating her clothing. That is a good skill to develop early.
