Sometimes we do have fun

In an effort to appreciate more fully the fleeting moments of childhood I will now write a post about the great Family Home Evening we had tonight. I think it was only ten minutes long, but that's part of what made it so great. We've actually been pretty consistent about having FHE every week for some time now, but I will admit that I've often just focused on the fact that it's a great excuse to make treats. Usually the lesson is just a story from The Friend or something like that. Today I decided to make a little more effort and came up with a treasure hunt. S-Boogie has been into playing "pirate" lately and I thought she'd enjoy it. I made a bunch of simple clues like "I'm a yellow fruit that [Little Dude] likes to eat" and she figured out each one. She had so much fun running through the house finding each clue for us. S-Boogie loved her treasure hunt and I felt good about picking an activity that helped her talents really shine. She told me it was "the best Family Home Evening ever". Especially since our treasure was brownie cookies and I let the kids each have two for our treat.

That was our shining moment for the day. It kind of makes up for this afternoon when S-Boogie pooped her pants on the playground or the incident later tonight when Little Dude took off his pajamas and diaper and peed on his crib (and the floor). Or the guilt I feel about not going on S-Boogie's class field trip tomorrow. But I'm not blogging about that--just the good moments, right?

Sounds like a great activity! Treasure hunts are always a good way to go. For family birthday parties when we were younger, my brothers would like to create treasure hunts for the birthday kid, sending them on a wild goose chase throughout the house in search for their gift. It was always a riot -- we loved it!

That's a REALLY good idea. I bet my little one would even go for it...

I remember mom coming on a field trip of mine in maybe fifth or sixth grade. She fell asleep on the bus with her mouth open and my friends laughed at ME. Sooo... maybe its no big deal to skip a few? What's with the idea that parents have to go on field trips anyway? They don't feel guilty for not going to school with their kids. I'm not being snarky, I really don't get it. If there are enough extra parents/staff for crowd control, why does every other parent have to feel guilty? Is this just part of the Guilt Industry that makes us hate our bodies and feel insecure about our parenting skills so we buy more stuff to "fix" what bad people we are? And sell magazines?

Man, I STILL fall asleep on the bus with my mouth open on field trips. I usually wake up because people are laughing at me. Sorry.
Awesome. We turned our Easter hunt into a treasure hunt in lieu of a bunny's visit. We hid a lunch box with candy, etc. in the back yard and actually made a map the kids had to use picture clues and numbers (paces) to find the next thing. The "X" was two long handled kids shovels and they had to dig. Heaps of preparation for about 8 minutes of you're-the-coolest-mommy-ever. I really like those Friendy-treat FHE's too, but now and then it is cool to go the extra mile.
