On Vacation

I should wait to post until tomorrow when I'm feeling more awake, but I feel compelled to blog right now. I enjoyed the blog party last night and was glad to see everyone who showed up. I really like entertaining and it's fun to get together with so many friends. I woke up feeling pretty nasty this morning, since I ate way too much food yesterday and then stayed up way too late talking. So of course the best thing to do when you're feeling gross is to get in the car for a 6 hour drive with a two-year-old. We left shortly before naptime, but unfortunately it took us nearly 4 hours of the drive to convince her to go to sleep. I don't sleep well in the car either, but at least I don't (usually) scream and cry about it. The last 2 hours of the drive were much more pleasant; and I discovered today that listening to books on tape is a great way to pass the time in the car. We're now in Vegas for the next few days, and hopefully tomorrow will be fun and relaxing. S-Boogie has a sandbox, a swimming pool, toys, and a kitty cat to entertain her; I just plan to spend as much time as possible in the pool or hot tub. If anything interesting happens, I'll blog about it. But you probably won't hear from me for a few days, since that's quite unlikely.

The Truth Comes Out

I have a problem when it comes to buying shoes. Well, it's actually a problem with buying clothing in general. I'm cheap. Very cheap. I tend to have arbitrary price limits in my head and refuse to buy anything that costs more than that. This does come in handy considering our limited funds for things like clothing and shoes, but it also means that I tend to have a wardrobe of odd, non-matching, ill-fitting clothes. While it's true that I have found some great things at thrift stores and on clearance, I definitely have other clothes that are just plain lame. I will often choose to buy things because they are cheap, even sacrificing what I really want because it doesn't fit my predetermined price conventions. I am convincing myself to buy this jacket because it is comfortable, stylish, fits a wardrobe need (I don't have a blazer or jacket), and matches a skirt I already have. Living with ideals

The first thing on my agenda in Davis was a lunch with some of the current graduate students. One of them asked me a question about my last name and my heritage, to which I replied that it was my husband's last name. That got me some fairly strange looks. Then there was the fact that I didn't order coffee after lunch with all of them. And then there was the awkwardness (more than once during the last few days) of trying to explain why I lived in Spain for over a year and didn't see any movies, go to any plays, or study at the university. Oh, and the fact that I don't drink wine and even though I'm not quite thirty I have been married for almost seven years and have two kids. Man, I am such a weirdo. I lived in Utah for so long that I became very comfortable in not having people think some of the things I do are strange.
