Feeling Martha-ish




As I'm sure you might have figured out, I don't read any decorating magazines or even attempt to fancy up my house (for example, I think a cardboard box makes a great living room accessory). But I did see a fun idea for decorating with kids' artwork a little while ago and decided to try it out. Especially since it was so easy: two thumbtacks, a piece of twine, and these adorable mini clothespins I found at Storeables:


Then this morning I slaved over a hot stove and produced two fabulosas tortillas espanolas for our ward's International Dinner:



Since that wasn't enough slaving, I let S-Boogie talk me into making a cake in honor of her grandma's birthday yesterday. She voted for chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting and sprinkles and had a great time helping me make and eat them.



(You can see that we tried putting cinnamon heart candies on one of the cupcakes, but S-Boogie decided they were "too spicy" so we switched to sprinkles).

I love cooking and organizing and all that, but now I'm ready for a break!

Looks like fun! How was the international dinner? I, too, am not very good at the house-decor thing. Hopefully having a "real" house will inspire me.

I'm looking at the middle picture and wishing I lived in your ward - or at least close enough to get invited to dinner! You're such a great cook!

And your decorating idea is cute - I'm sure it made Sophie feel good too.

Thank you for making (and eating) my birthday cake!! I have no problem making my own birthday cake, but for some reason this year I didn't do it...oh, that's right, I had a math workshop until 7:00 P.M. the night before B-day and so I was too tired. But--Now I feel completely celebrated!

One of the features of our new apartment is a working garbage disposal. It's been a few years since we've had one, and Mr. Fob and I are suddenly discovering a new source of marital conflict. According to Mr. Fob, movies and television have taught him that you should never stick your hand in the garbage disposal, even if it is turned off. Happy, Happy Blog-day Foxy Dear

Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of my blog. I had no idea where my life would go when I started this blog, and it's fun for me to read back through the archives and remember feelings and events that I have already forgotten. I think the most surprising thing about blogging that I have discovered is the sense of community. I have about fifty blogs that I follow somewhat regularly; many of them are people I haven't ever met in person. I still consider them to be my friends. I've been very grateful for all the virtual support I've received from so many people who don't really even "know" me. Miss Nemesis recently celebrated her blog's special day by asking lurkers to come out of the woodwork and reveal who they were and how they found her blog. She got 52 comments. If you want to make my day, see if you can top her numbers. Maybe then I can change my blognym to "Queen of the Universe".

Coming Out in Public

A little over 6 years ago I was on my mission in Madrid. I was transferred to new area at the same time as another elder. I remember asking him if was really from Hawaii, since he was so tall and blonde. We ended up serving together in the same district for nearly seven and a half months and had a lot of good times together. He was actually nice to the sisters and a hard worker, without being too zealous and overbearing. I knew he was going home just a month before me and planning on being an English major when he got back to BYU. When I was transferred out of that area, we exchanged emails and addresses and promised to get back in touch some day, like I did with a lot of other missionaries. I got home in January and started trying to contact some of the people I'd been friends with back in the mission.
